Kaija Lukas was born (at a young age) in Rapla, Estonia. Deeply passionate about the beauty and healing power of classical music, she has dedicated her life to bringing it to life —awakening love and wonder in as many people as possible.
Kaija was 2 years old when she was part of a peaceful political demonstration in 1989 where people held hands to form a human chain – Baltic chain - across the 3 Baltic countries- Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
An avid chamber musician, Kaija plays both violin and viola with various professional ensembles across Europe, including the English Chamber Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed with the Pavao, Idomeneo, and Piatti String Quartets.
Kaija began her musical journey at the Rapla Music School and continued her studies at the Tallinn Music High School. She earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, complemented by further diplomas from Temple University in Philadelphia and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
Her talent has been recognized with several prizes at national and international competitions, including ‘Remember Enescu’ in Romania, the Aram Khachaturian Competition in Armenia, and Estonia’s national competitions.
Kaija has appeared as guest concertmaster with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, the Estonian National Opera Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. She also regularly performs as the second concertmaster with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
After sixteen years living in London and Amsterdam, Kaija is thrilled to be living back in Tallinn with her family—a place she has always called home.
Kaija is honoured to be playing on a violin by Auguste Sebastien Bernadel (Père) (1830-1840) generously on loan from the Estonian Instrument Foundation, owner Ms Triin O’Brock)
Her viola is made by French luthier Yann Besson in 2007.
Kaija is a violin and viola teacher at the MUBA school, where she loves supporting young musicians as they begin their own lifelong journey with music.
She is excited to work and be on stage with her colleagues in the Trio Punctum (flute-violin-guitar) as well as Ludensemble – a contemporary music ensemble which juggles music, time, media and form.
Kaija loves to ride her cargo bike and hopes to get a dog one day soon.
